Sanneizaka / Kiyomizu-dera

Sanneizaka is a stone-paved slope that forms part of the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and is known as a place where one can experience traditional Japanese sentiment. The name “Sanneizaka” comes from the belief that climbing up the hill would bring about an easy childbirth. This legend is attributed to the fact that many people used to walk this path to pray to the Childbirth Goddess of Mercy at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Sanneizaka is a stone-paved slope that retains its historical flavor, and is lined with machiya (traditional townhouses), souvenir stores, and teahouses that have been around since the Edo period, making the area bustling with tourists whenever they visit. The unique scenery is a symbol of traditional Japanese beauty. The area is also designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by Kyoto City, and is considered important from the viewpoint of landscape preservation.
