Koyasu Tower / Kiyomizu-dera

The Koyasu Tower at Kiyomizu-dera is a three-story pagoda located within the temple grounds. This tower is renowned as a sacred site for safe childbirth, attracting many women who come to pray for the safe delivery of their children. The name "Koyasu" literally means "safe childbirth," and the tower has been an object of worship for centuries. The current structure of Koyasu Tower was rebuilt in 1633 (the 10th year of the Kan'ei era), as the previous tower was destroyed by fire. It stands on a hill slightly away from the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera, making it a tranquil and serene spot that requires a bit of a walk to reach. This peaceful atmosphere enhances the spiritual experience for visitors. From Koyasu Tower, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto city, especially during the cherry blossom season in spring and the colorful foliage in autumn, when many tourists come to admire the breathtaking scenery. The tower is also visible from the main stage of Kiyomizu-dera, harmonizing beautifully with the changing landscapes throughout the year. Beyond its value as a tourist attraction, Koyasu Tower plays an important role as a place of worship. It is a must-visit spot when exploring Kiyomizu-dera, offering a calming environment perfect for deep reflection and prayer.
