San-no-maru Square / Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle's San-no-maru Square, where the residence and palace of the feudal lord once stood, is now a place of relaxation for citizens and tourists. The plaza is known as an excellent viewpoint from which to view the beautiful keep of Himeji Castle, and is also used as a venue for cherry blossom viewing and various events. The plaza is also home to the Senhime Botan Garden, where visitors can enjoy beautiful flowers in every season. Historically, San-no-maru was home to the main castle, a palace used by the feudal lord for official business, the Mukoyashiki Palace, a villa, and the Musashino Palace, where Honda Tadatoki and Sen Hime lived as newlyweds. These palaces were demolished during the Meiji period, but today the San-no-maru plaza is a popular place for many people to remember the history of the area.
