Nunomon / Himeji Castle
The Nunomon Gate of Himeji Castle is a solid turret gate located at the entrance to the Otte side of the Kaminarimaru, and is an unusual structure with a two-tiered, two-story upper section. It is estimated to have been built during the Keicho era and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. This gate is located at a key point along the “lower road” leading to the castle via the Kamiyamari-maru and Obi-gurinawa to the Honmaru, and boasts the best defense of Himeji Castle. In front of the gate is a narrow Masugata-style square, designed to lure in and destroy the enemy. The gate is also equipped with hidden stone drops, a gate covered with rivets, and other defensive devices.
