Nu no Yagura / Himeji Castle

The Nu no Yagura, located on the west side of the castle, forms part of a series of buildings in the Nishinomaru. This turret was one of the main defensive facilities in the Nishinomaru and also served as a passageway for communication within the castle. The turret was also surrounded by a moat and high stone walls, making it an important base for the castle's defenses. It is believed that the Nu no Yagura was constructed during the major renovation of Himeji Castle by Ikeda Terumasa in the early Edo period. Ikeda Terumasa rebuilt Himeji Castle to be grand and solid, incorporating the latest castle-building technology of the time. This turret was also built as part of this effort, and was designed to strengthen the defense of the Nishinomaru. Furthermore, “Nu no Yagura” is connected to a building called “Choukyo” in the Nishinomaru, where Hideyoshi Toyotomi's wife, Nene (Kita Masasho), is said to have had her living space. Nu no Yagura” is indispensable in understanding the complex defense system and magnificent castle structure of Himeji Castle.
