Guest House / Himeji Castle

The “Guest House” at Himeji Castle was a special facility established within the castle and was used primarily to entertain important guests. This facility functioned as a place of reception and lodging for the lord of the castle and feudal lords when they received political and diplomatic dignitaries, and played an important role in demonstrating the prestige and authority of the castle. The architectural style and interior decoration of the guesthouse reflected the finest techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of the time, leaving a deep impression on visitors. In addition, ingenuity was evident throughout to provide the best possible hospitality to guests while maintaining harmony with the castle's defensive functions. However, many buildings, including the guesthouse, were lost due to changes in the times, wars, and the decree to abolish the castle after the Meiji Restoration. Today, Himeji Castle is being preserved and restored as a World Heritage site, but specific remains and detailed materials on the guesthouse are limited, making it difficult to get a full picture of the castle.
