Drum Tower / Himeji Castle

The Drum Tower of Himeji Castle was built between 1601 and 1609. This turret is a single-layered structure with a main tiled roof and a unique folded shape. As its name suggests, it was once used to install drums to announce the time and send signals in case of emergencies. It also played an important role as part of the castle's defensive functions, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on December 14, 1931, in recognition of its historical value. Today, the Taiko Yagura is one of the highlights of Himeji Castle and is familiar to many tourists.
