Sakuramon Bridge / Himeji Castle

Sakuramon Bridge spans the inner moat in front of the castle, and a wooden bridge existed during the Edo period. However, it was torn down as time went by and the moat was filled in. Later, excavations uncovered the remains of the bridge abutments from that period, and a new bridge was constructed in the image of the wooden bridge of the Edo period, making use of these remains. This new Sakuramon Bridge, completed in 2007, is 22 meters long and 7 meters wide. Although it looks wooden on the outside, it is actually made of reinforced concrete and designed to accommodate the passage of large vehicles in an emergency.
